We have compiled some of the most important things for
a septic system owner to remember. These are basic tips that we have
run into in the years of servicing septic systems. If you have any questions
about these please feel free to call and ask us. We get all kinds of
questions every day and we are glad to help.
1. Routine maintenance is probably the best way to
ensure a long, healthy life for your system. Septic systems, like our
cars, require regular maintenance. Most tanks, depending on usage, should
be pumped every 3-5 years.
2. Conserve water that goes into the system to reduce
the load on the septic system. For example, do laundry throughout the
week instead of all at once. Also, try not to use more than one water
source at a time. An example of this is not using the washing machine,
dish washer, and shower all at one time.
3. Tree roots that invade your septic system can do
major damage. Keep trees at least 100 feet away from the septic system.
Trees with aggressive roots, such as willows, should be planted even
farther away.
4. A soggy drainfield can’t handle waste effectively,
so design landscaping roof gutters, and foundation drains to divert
excess water away from the septic system.
5. Never flush cat litter, disposable diapers, feminine
products, condoms, paper towels, facial tissues, coffee grounds, cigarette
butts, or similar items down the toilet. They will quickly clog your
septic tank.
6. Do not use a garbage disposal or dispose of vegetables,
meat, fat, oil, coffee grounds, and other undigested food products in
the septic system.
7. Do not overuse heavy cleaners, especially those
containing bleach. They kill beneficial bacteria in the septic tank,
so solids can’t break down as quickly.
8. Do not pour grease down the drain. It will eventually
clog your drainfield. If that happens you’ll need extensive (and
possibly expensive) septic system repairs.
9. Do not pour hazardous chemicals down the drain.
They can harm your septic system and will eventually find their way
into the groundwater.
10. Do not drive over the drainfield, build a structure
on top of it, or cover it with concrete or asphalt. Septic systems should
be easily accessible for routine maintenance.
11. Do plant grass on the drainfield to minimize soil
erosion.
12. We recommend a monthly dose of an enzyme product
that adds beneficial bacteria to the septic system.
